Super spider
Thursday 29th November 2012 at 15h09 - Ushuaia TV
In competition - Pariscience 2012
They are said to be poisonous, evil, hairy and treacherous. Whether from their physical appearance or their behaviour, spiders suffer a bad reputation. We know little of their habits and we often fear them. And yet the spider is a creature of many powers and an endless source of amazement. With more than 40,000 species, the spider offers a rich field of study for international scientists. From the summits of the highest mountains to the most distant isles, they have conquered the entire world. They adapt, change and multiply, and form an essential part of the ecological balance. Thanks to some extraordinary filming techniques, this documentary leads us to the heart of the world of spiders – a world which remains largely a mystery, even though we live with spiders on a daily basis. This astonishing world can be glimpsed under any wardrobe, or with a trip to your balcony or garden.

Bird Brain
Saturday 24th November 2012 at 01h35 - France 5
Selected at Pariscience 2012
It’s used as an insult – “bird brain” – not very clever. But in the last few years research has shown that this idea is out of date. This film follows scientists discovering that bird intelligence is so advanced that birds can be compared to the great apes. Some of the most sophisticated research has involved birds from the crow family, including ravens and New Caledonian crows, and new research on parrots reveals that there are plenty of other smart birds out there. It’s not just the bird brain “superstars” that deserve a re-think. From garden birds, such as starlings, to waterfowl, such as geese, we’re only just beginning to uncover the surprises to be found in the minds of birds.
Sailing the north pole
Saturday 24th November 2012 at 01h35 - Planète + Thalassa
Selected at Pariscience 2012
This programme is a documentary about the expedition of Sebastien Roubinet et Rodolphe André who have decided to cross the Arctic Ocean from Alaska to the Norwegian islands of Spitsbergen, via the geographic North Pole! For this, Sébastien Roubinet has invented a strange little boat "TiBabouche" capable of sailing on sea and on ice. This boat is a prototype brimming with technology and science, made-up by Hervé Le Goff, a CNRS engineer. It will allow Hervé to calibrate the satellite “Cryosat”, the first one capable of measuring the thickness of ice.
