The main characters in The Chimpanzee Complex are humanized chimpanzees that, after living years with humans in a private home or circus, are liberated and now learn to live with members of their own species. The carers who accompany this vulnerable process, work towards a paradoxical utopia: as people they try to let the animals be animals again.
