This film tells the greatest detective story in modern scientific history – how we came to understand the threat posed by human induced climate change.
Forty years ago many scientists were worried that a new ice age beckoned. Yet within a decade they were warning about the dangers of catastrophic global warming. So what happened to change their mind?
Presenter Professor Iain Stewart uncovers the secret history of global warming. He introduces a colourful cast of characters including Bill Keeling – the great unsung hero of global warming science; the secretive “Jason” group of scientists who advise the US President; and William Nierenberg, one of the fathers of the global warming “sceptic” movement.
By the 1980’s the scientific evidence was stacking up in favour of global warming. In 1989 Margaret Thatcher became the first world leader to campaign against climate change. It seemed like the debate was over.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
