Special session - What do we expect from scientific truth ?

Friday 09th October 2009 from 18h00 to 19h30
Salle 1 / Auditorium

There’s no doubt that in our Western societies an argument with scientific backing holds high credibility in the eyes of the public. But what is scientific truth?
What does it consist of? For most of us, science means objectivity, independence and rigor in search of a fundamental truth, but it’s the scientific community alone which, at a given moment, grants a scientific discovery the privilege of truth. What criteria do they use, and how do they proceed? What do we expect from scientific truth?

Debate with :

  • Jean-Claude Ameisen, Professor of Immunology, President of the Ethic Committee of Inserm (French public organization dedicated to biological, medical and public health research)
  • Etienne Klein, physicist at the CEA, Professor at l'École Centrale de Paris philospher.
  • Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, professor of history and philosophy of Sciences at the University of Paris X
