The heart transplant was the greatest medical adventure of the 20th century. Who would have imagined that the heart, the essential organ of life, could be replaced like a humble motor? Who would have predicted that a person who had just died could give their heart to someone else, thus saving their life? The first heart transplant exploded many myths and marked the dawning of a new era in medicine. The bombshell went off in South Africa in December 1967, not so long ago in fact, and this page of medical history is still being written.
