Special session - Chemistry and you

Tuesday 11th October 2011 from 14h00 to 15h30
Salle 2 / Grand Amphithéâtre

With support from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research

... The chemistry is transforming the world and our everyday objects...

Chemistry: good or bad? The problem is complex because the issue of the dangers of chemicals are especially the uses made of it.

Pharmacology or weapons, industrial accidents or analysis of pollutants, new materials and waste... the place of chemistry in the world's future depends on ethical concerns of scientists, corporate responsibility, the adequacy of laws and consumer's senses.

Through excerpts from documentary films, alternately "for" and "against" chemistry, Caroline Petigny, scientific relations at BASF and Richard-Emmanuel Eastes, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the Ecole normale superieure, director of the Espace des sciences Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, will explore all these dimensions, leaving the middle school and high school students and all those who wish, many opportunities to express themselves.

Debate with :

  • Richard-Emmanuel Eastes, associate professor of chemistry at the École normale supérieure, director of the ESPGG
  • Caroline Petigny, in charge of scientific relations at BASF
