“The air of the Himalayas is just as polluted as that of European cities” This was the shocking headline in October 2008 which first informed the public of the scientific findings of atmospheric measurements taken at over 5,000m altitude, at the foot of the Everest. The roof of the world was no longer the pure haven that is so often imagined! After the discovery of an enormous cloud of pollution over the Indian Ocean, for the first time a Franco-Italian team revealed surprising levels of soot particle concentration in an area as unspoilt as the highest Himalayan summits. Clouds know no borders... but science is on their trail.
