Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. A green city with its bay, iconic beaches, mountains and large urban forests…but if you go beyond the picture postcard idyll, Rio is suffering from pollution, landslides, poor sewage systems, dilapidated buildings and filthy lagoons.
Rio has sacrificed its environment to its industrial policy and is now paying the price. The gradual opening up of the favelas and increased public awareness, as well as a social movement borne out of the failure of international environmental summits are all forces for change. There are more and more initiatives underway – both big and small – the ball is definitely rolling.
