French version of the film
Guédelon Castle is a unique 25-year project to construct a medieval castle using only the tools and materials available in the thirteenth century. This film follows a season at Guédelon to tell the story of its construction as never before revealed. Now in its seventeenth year, this epic project is providing a new academic understanding of medieval crafts and how people lived and worked in the thirteenth century.
We follow the stonemasons as they build a spiral staircase for the chapel, a task that requires absolute geometical precision without the use of modern technology. The first ever reconstruction of a medieval watermill is undertaken with no past examples in existence. And devising a drainage system for the castle means building a pottery kiln to make seventeen metres of ceramic pipes.
At the heart of the film is the relationship between academics and artisans who have strived from the outset to ensure the absolute scientific accuracy of every stage at Guédelon.
